Welcome to the April edition of the Duxbury Park Golf Course newsletter for 2018.

We didn’t get the start to the golf season that we were all hoping for, record levels of rainfall and a couple of random snow days thrown into the surprise of us all. However, the season is now fully underway and the forecasters have promised much improved weather for the remainder of the month and a whopping 20 degrees forecasted one day this week.

The Masters inspired us all to get out playing as we experienced some busy days on the golf course. Defending Champion Sergio Garcia showed that even the very best can take big numbers on one hole and it was great to see Patrick Reed win the green jacket on an exciting final day.

Golf Course

What a challenging month March has been with regards to golf course maintenance and preparing the course for the start of the season. Head Greenkeeper Jon Wilson States “The recent conditions have been some of the most challenging I have experienced in 15 years, it’s been very difficult to get machines out on the golf course”

Interesting Golf Fact

The term “birdie” comes from an American named Ab Smith. While playing a round in 1899, he played what he described as a “bird of a shot”, which became “birdie” over time.

Golf Club Life

The weather wasn’t great but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the 63 members who turned up for the Captain’s Drive-in on the 7th of April. Club Captain Keith Bamber strode out onto the first tee following a complimentary shot of 18 year old Glenmorangie whiskey courtesy of Glendale Golf and struck a great drive, unfortunately the drive struck timber and rebounded back recording a distance of 159 yards.

The rain persisted for most of the day and we had a lot of wet soggy competitors sat in Nineteen for their complementary Pie and Peas afterwards. Keith raffled off a 4 litre bottle of whiskey with the proceeds going to guide dogs for the blind, his chosen charity. We also held a masters quiz which was won by Paul Henry who received a bottle of pink gin! The atmosphere was great and created a fantastic buzz in the clubhouse. We look forward to supporting the Captain and club throughout 2018.

Thank-you for reading.
