Portsmouth June Newsletter
Welcome to our June newsletter updating you on what’s happening at Portsmouth Golf Course. After taking its time the long awaited summer weather is now with us, the course is in great condition with members, visitors and societies making the most of sun drenched fairways and greens.
The golf course is looking in great shape as we approach the warmest months of the year. The team are still catching up on projects that were delayed from the wet start to the year but are on course to have these complete by the end of June. Many of these projects will go unnoticed and don’t affect day to day play of the course but will improve the overall experience.
We have now completed the spraying of all fairways, green surrounds and certain areas of rough. This will remove all daisies and weeds and improve overall health of these areas.
The green’s are looking very healthy following a recent fertiliser application and continued cultural practices such as verti cutting. This process removes and assists with control of thatch levels which in return provides better putting surfaces. With the increase in golfing traffic we are now changing holes twice a week to keep the hole cups and edges looking fresh.
All teeing areas have been spiked to relieve compaction of the soil. We are hoping that the tees will react positively to this with much needed air entering the soil profile and encourage grass growth. The irrigation system is the best it has been with all greens receiving an excellent coverage throughout the night along with most tees.
The main focus for the team over the coming months is to keep up with cutting schedules now that the grass is growing thick and fast. We have had some great feedback from customers and members of late which we really do appreciate.
Two new projects that the team are focusing on are the introduction of a 5 hole Fun Course on the practice area and the introduction of a Teaching Academy.
The practice ground will also be available as a traditional hitting area but the main focus will be to utilise this area with more usage especially with those new to the game. When complete we will encourage members and visitors to introduce family members including juniors to try the game in safe, user friendly surroundings.
The Teaching Academy will be led by our Golf Services Supervisor Nathan Graham. Nathan has been a member of the PGA for the past 2 years and is now in a position to develop an academy with the offering of both individual and group coaching sessions. Please keep an eye out for our fresh branding and schedules of what we have planned.
Both projects will have a positive impact on the facility and help encourage new takers to the game. Our aim to make our facility accessible to all and these new initiatives will certainly assist with our goal.
Our events this month are dominated by our food and beverage team. Towards the end of May we saw our first themed evening with our 80’s night. The night went well with those that attended having a good time. Our next night, a 90’s night is scheduled this month for the Friday 29th June. We’ve already sold a large amount of tickets and are once again looking forward to a fun filled evening. Please call 02392 375999 for more information and to secure your place.
All of England’s World Cup qualifiers will be shown live in the bar area. We will have both food and drink offers for all to enjoy so why not join us and cheer on Gareth Southgate’s men. As a reminder the games are on –
Monday 18th June – KO 19.00
Sunday 24th June – KO 13.00
Thursday 28th June – KO 19.00
We will be offering select drinks at just £2.50 starting one hour before kick off and lasting 3 hours. Effectively a ‘Happy 3 Hours’’ will include Carlsberg pints, bottles of Budweiser and house spirits to name a few. We will also have some tasty basket meals options available throughout the night.
Once again thank you for reading our latest newsletter. We look forward to seeing you throughout the month of June and updating you once again next month.
Portsmouth Golf Club update
Special thanks must go to all the members, sponsors and golfers for making the Rowans Charity Golf Day such a success. We raised just over £3,600.00 which will be greatly appreciated by the Hospice who, as you know, need regular injection of funds.
As an added bonus, everybody enjoyed the golf event on a warm, sunny, dry day and relaxed after with a BBQ, a few drinks and good banter.
We’re now looking forward to the Club Championships and the Handicap Trophies that are also played for on Saturday 16th June. The Championship & Handicap qualifying round will be on the Saturday with the final round of the Championship being played the following day.
Member’s need to add their name to the Saturday ‘block booking’ sheet. On Sunday play will be in reverse score order, lowest score last.
Don’t forget, if you are not playing then why not pop up and be part of the event by supporting the winners.
Details of the new ‘World Handicapping System’ due to be implemented in early 2020 can be found on the website and in the member’s room. Golfers will start to see its introduction by September 2019 when your initial draft handicap will be indicated. Some may stay the same or some may lift or drop as it will be based on the average of your best eight rounds out of your last twenty rounds.
Another interesting point is; you will be able to submit a supplementary score through the PSI at home or at another club. Even if you play in a society at another club then you will be able to put that score through their PSI system. All still subject to entering before play.
Also within the changes; SLOPE will be introduced. All courses will be rated so your handicap may be adjusted depending on the course your playing.
Interesting times for golfers as we enter a period of new rules and handicapping changes.
Look out for Captain’s Day on the 7th July. Mike Wiggins our Captain has a lot of good ideas for the day, so why not join in and at the same time help his charity.
