Portsmouth July Newsletter
Welcome to our July newsletter updating you on what’s happening at Portsmouth Golf Course.
I would like to thank everyone for their patience throughout this adversely dry period of weather we are having. We have though despite these conditions recently had a success with our irrigation upgrades, being able to reinstall 3 more of our tees on the overnight watering program. As well as these upgrades improvements to certain areas of pipework on the golf course have been vital and have improved the water pressure with the night time watering.
This coming week with the cooler nights promised we will be spraying a wetting agent coupled with a seaweed compound. This will alleviate the dry patch damage to our greens and help the turf retain more of the irrigation water so desperately needed. When the spraying shows signs of success we will a week later apply a granular fertiliser to encourage more summer growth and suppress any summer diseases which are very common this time of year.
We do plan to deep tine the greens within the next month as this is important for root growth, de-compaction, alleviating stress to the turf and allowing a gas exchange in the soil profile. This practice is imperative this time of year and will improve the health of the greens and put us in a good position for the cooler months. All cutting schedules remain in place although the extreme heat does slow growth rates a little.
As a greenkeeper being in the industry for 25 years I can honestly say I haven’t experienced a dry spell like we are currently having. It’s certainly providing a challenge but at the same time it’s great to see more and more golfers out on the course enjoying the prolonged dry period. We certainly shouldn’t moan knowing out track record of recent British summers!
Thanks for your support as always
Matt & the Team
The tail end of June saw our second themed night with our ‘90’s Night’. The evening was jam packed with 90’s classics and was more of a success than our previous 80’s night that we held in May. With these events proving a success we have scheduled a ‘Noughties Night’ for Friday 24th August. This evening will fast forward a decade and again will be jam packed with hits, this time dedicated to the millennium period. Please make a note in you diaries, you can register your interest with our F&B team today on 02392 375999.
In recent weeks we have been working hard on the introduction of our new Teaching Academy. This will be a great addition to the services we have here at Portsmouth Golf Course especially with our planned ‘Get in to Golf’ lessons that will help drive new golfers to this wonderful game. Please do take a moment and view our coaching page here
If you need any assistance with your game or know of a family member who would like to try golf than please do direct them to our website or call the Golf Reception on 02392 372210. We also have a Junior weekend class starting on Saturday 21st July. This will run every Saturday from 10am – 11am and will have eight spots available, again please call our Golf Reception if this is of interest.
Golf Club update
Well the year seems to zoom by with events that we were looking forward to in the depths of a wet winter such as the Club Championship has passed us by. On that event, we must congratulate Dave Gatrell for retaining the trophy for another year. Our Captain Mike Wiggins showed the field how to play in the first round but, Dave, after a first round that even he wasn’t overly impressed with came through in his second round with an excellent total to take the championship.
Results: Club Champion: Dave Gatrell – Net Club Champion: Mark Finney – Divisional Winners: Div I: Ian Curtis Div II: Craig McPhee Div III: Howard Kirby.
Congratulations to our Captain Mike Wiggins for laying on such a great Captains Day. Member’s enjoyed a sunny hot day to play golf – Half-way refreshments – Nearest the pins, longest drives – BBQ after and a full prize table. Whilst his drive-in tee shot wasn’t his best, the day was due to Mike and his family who worked so hard to make it an enjoyable day.
