Portsmouth August Newsletter
Welcome to our August newsletter where we will update you on what’s happening at Portsmouth Golf Course. On the whole it’s been another month of amazing weather which has been both positive and challenging at the same time. Other highlights include the recent Portsmouth Open which proved a great success.
News Flash!……. FREE Junior Golf ! Please remember that we offer a FREE Junior Green Fee on the back of any full paying adult or concession. We want to make sure golf is affordable and accessible. We also offer a FREE Junior membership on the back of any Adult 12 month membership. Two great ways of getting those younger ones out on to the course.
Once again I would like to thank everyone for their patience and support throughout this challenging period of weather. As I write this we are experiencing a slight drop in temperature and significant rainfall which will hydrate our course and get some much needed nutrients into the soil profile.
Prior to the recent rainfall we have been irrigating our greens and most of our tees twice a night. Now the cooler conditions have arrived we can start regenerating some of the summer stressed greens with seaweed and iron supplements and overseeding where needed. The greens were tined 2 weeks ago to alleviate the stress caused by prolonged play and improve the general health of the turf. As it was so successful we may repeat the process before september to aid the general recovery of the turf.
The deep rough is now being mowed down to 6 inches as all the grass and flowers have finished flowering. Mowing these areas twice a year scrub the scrub from creeping in and keeps the aesthetic nature of the rough both uniform and in check.
The recent Portsmouth Open once again proved a real success. My team and I are very grateful of the kind comments we received and hope that all competitors enjoyed the course that we have.
Thank you for your continued support, let’s hope the good weather continues late into the year (with a little rain at night here and there).

Golf Club update
This month we started with a bang as we held our annual Open Golf Week. The weather couldn’t have been better with wall to wall sunshine every day, in fact there were some pretty exhausted players finishing their rounds after 36 holes on the Friday, apart from those who had good rounds!
We started the week with the ‘Veteran’s’ on the Wednesday and a worthy winner in Arthur Middlehurst with 39pts just beating Barry Lines on a countback also on 39pts. Thursday hosted the ‘Ladies Three Ball Bowater’ open. It was good to see a full field this year for this event and many familiar faces from other clubs. The runaway winners were the team from Southwick Park on 83pts. Friday started at 7am to a very full field entering the ‘Sir John Rowland Cup’. Excellent play from Jamie Wiggins on 85-19=66 just squeezed out Bill Taylor also on 83-17=66, but just under the radar was Dominic Carson on net 67. Alasdair Cheyne from South Winchester shot a gross 71 to head the first round of the Gross Aggregate Cup.
PM started the ‘Sir William Dupree Cup’ and Gary Killick came in to win the event not before carding a hole-in-one to an 83-17=66.
Both events go towards the ‘Aggregate Cup’ and ‘radar man’ Dominic Carson followed his morning 67 round with a 68 to win the Cup. James Hawley, a regular visitor to the event, shot a closing 73 gross to add to his gross 75 in the morning to win the Aggregate gross event. Saturday gathered a large field to play in the ‘Better Ball’ open. Continuing his excellent play, Gary Killick and his partner Jason Goldring romped home to a net 58 to spread-eagle the other players. Sunday started again to a clear blue sky as players set out to play in the ‘Tee Topics’ point’s event. A different event as players are given ¾ of their handicap in points, then play scratch Stableford to add to those points. Bill Batchelor playing off 13 started with 9.75 and added to it to score 36.75 to win the event.
We now look forward to the Haskett later this month, look out for the entry forms.
