Portsmouth October Newsletter
Welcome to our October newsletter. This months update follows an emphatic win for team Europe in the recent Ryder Cup played in Paris. After a strong start from the USA team Friday morning, Europe soon found their form and turned the scoreboard blue as the tournament continued. Whilst on the subject of the Ryder Cup congratulations must go to our recent VIP Four ball winner Scott Mengham. Scott won our Facebook competition of a golf day for four including buggies and meals either side of their game. If you don’t already like our Facebook page then give us a like here to see further competitions and general updates on the golf course. Please read on for an update on the golf course, events and club activities.
After some recent rain and cooler nights the greens have now started to recover from the prolonged period of dry weather. To assist in this continual recovery we have recently spiked the greens to a depth of 5 inches. This process alleviates compaction, improves nutrient uptake and allows a gas exchange from the soil. We noticed an almost immediate effect with the health of the turf within 24 hours.
In the next 2 weeks we will be spraying an Iron seaweed compound to the greens. This fertiliser mix toughens the grass up and ensures the greens are at maximum health for the winter months. A preventative fungicide will also be sprayed to prevent any autumnal diseases creeping in.
Due to the extreme dry spell and a busy golfing year our tee boxes have endured high levels of turf stress. So to bring some life back into them we will be doing some major renovations in the coming weeks. This will include spiking, seeding, topdressing where needed and a heavy fertilising.
Despite adverse conditions this year we are proud of the course and have had plenty of compliments from visiting players and members alike.
Thanks once again for your continued support. We have some exciting projects lined up for the coming winter months which the team and I look forward to sharing with you in forthcoming newsletters.

Golf Club update
On the membership side, the Club has had an excellent year both in terms of Club events, competitions and matches against other clubs. We increased the number of team and individual entries into the National Association Public Golf Clubs (NAPGC) national events. This expanded the range available to members. Our Veterans and Ladies Section have had an excellent season, all enjoyed in one of the best summers on record.
But we would like to see more new members joining us, especially you ladies! We’re offering membership right round to April 2020 for the price of a yearly fee to all new members. That’s up to a 50% SAVING! Glue that to the offers from Glendale Golf and you have one very special golfing package.
Full membership is only £95, if you’re 65+ it’s £80 which includes your handicap, competitions, affiliation fees, NAPGC subscription and specially liability insurance. FREE to juniors up to the age of 18.
Why not try our Silver Membership for just £40 that gives you many of the above benefits?
