Portsmouth November Newsletter
Welcome to our November newsletter. As the temperatures start to drop and the evenings close in, it’s hard not to think about the impending winter that we will shortly embrace. The golf course has held up extremely well and is playing great at this moment in time.
This time is 2017 we were down to 14 holes so it just shows that the weather on the whole has been kind in 2018 especially the past couple of months. As we start to close off the golfing season we will be working hard behind the scenes on projects to improve the course over the winter period. We looking forward to sharing these with you and updating you on progress throughout the coming months.
Almost out of nowhere we have just taken 3 inches of rain. We seem to have either no rain or everything all at once these last few years. With the ground being wet and a heavy dew most mornings we have now taken the decision to remove buggies from service as we approach mid November. Safety of our customers is paramount here along with course preservation.
We have just taken the decision to move all par 3 holes onto mats to help preserve the tee areas and allow them to recover after a busy season. All tees areas have been spiked and fertilised to aid recovery and will shortly receive a heavy dressing and over seed. We will merge other teeing areas onto mats as and when required.
To assist with the general health and continued improvement of the greens we will be fertilising with a winter granular feed. This is high in potassium which strengthens the grass and allows us to achieve a decent putting surface during the winter months.
We are also in the process of sorting our winter projects. We plan to not just continue thinning out dead and diseased trees but improve some path areas and improve irrigation to some of our tee areas. We will keep you up to date with our progress over the coming months.
As for the immediate future we will be spending most of our resources on blowing and collecting the leaves that are dropping this time of year. We will shortly be receiving a machine dedicated to this enabling us to clear all areas affecting play.
We look forward to updating you all next month.

Golf Club update
This time of year we find ourselves roughly half way through the Turkey Trot schedule of competitions with all members competing in various events on a weekly basis. Our presentation night will be shortly upon us on Saturday 24th November. This is being held at the golf course upstairs in the bar area and is set to be a great night with food and entertainment. A big part of the night is celebrating trophy winners from the 2018 season so please do show your support.
Date for your diary – The Shirley Rees Memorial Trophy this year is being held on Saturday 15th December. Open to all this event is always a great day and enjoyed by all. Entry sheets are in the club room so please do add your name to the list.
See you on the fairways soon.
