Portsmouth February Newsletter
A little later than usual but welcome to this month’s newsletter where we bring you an update on what’s happening at Portsmouth Golf Course. Since our update in January, the weather on the whole has been kind with us having 18 holes open for most of 2019. The course has held up very well especially after the recent snow that unfortunately closed us for a couple of days. For us it’s now countdown to the forthcoming golfing season which will be with us in no time.
Greens – The greens have held up very well over the winter period and are set nicely for the up and coming season. With the inclement weather we see this time of year we look to cut when we have windows of opportunity which tends to be at least once per week. To assist with the health of the greens we will shortly be applying a granular feed which will provide much needed nutrients. To assist with our plans for 2019 we have requested assistance from one of our suppliers to carry out a soil test for us. With the results from this we can really focus our efforts on improving the greens further still and enhance our agronomy programme.
Fairways & Tees – The fairways are being block cut this time of year and again cut when opportunities arise. This requires us to constantly monitor weather forecasts and utilise our time efficiently when required. As soon as the warmer weather arrives and the ground becomes firmer we will look to define fairways and stripe on a weekly basis.
A majority of the tee areas remain off mats whilst we get through the final months of the cold period. With our grass tees being rested we have seen great recovery and will look to bring them back into play for the start of the season, this generally being mid March / April time. Other projects have included clearing areas of shrub and bush to the right of the 4th fairway and the the left of the 6th which will assist with ball retrieval and pace of play.
In January’s report we mentioned our preseason plans naming them our “New Year’s Resolutions”. The team are working hard to deliver these and look forward to seeing the benefits of each one over the coming weeks. In next months report we will update you on the progress of each area.
As always thanks for your ongoing support.
Matt and the team
Our Food & Beverage team have had a busy start to 2019 with the venue being hired our for special occasions pretty much every Friday and Saturday night. The venue was very busy in 2018 and this looks to continue into 2019 with a very positive diary of events already booked in.
The team have been busy working with Portsmouth Golf Club making sure plans are in place for their large events such as the Rowans Hospice Charity Day. In addition to the large one off events we also look forward to hosting a busy schedule of club matches where we see the Men’s, Ladies and Veterans sections play against other clubs generally from within the region.
In 2018 we introduced a number of themed nights that went down very well. We will shortly be confirming nights and dates for this year so please keep an eye out for these.
Golf Club Update
Spring is here and the first signs of the warm sun means we are near to a new playing season.
Entries close soon for the Men’s knockout competitions, so if you’ve not entered so far then quickly do so, details in the Club room.
As the competition season starts, then quickly refresh yourself with the new main rule changes so you do not find yourself being disqualified for breaking them. A lost ball search is now 3 minutes not 5, leaving the flag in to putt and dropping a ball from the knee are some of the alien changes we’re not used too.
Keep these dates in your diary:
- 18 April – Start of the evening Thursday Roll-Ups
- 25 May – Rowans Charity Day
- 8 June – Dave Houlihan Team Open
- 22/23 June – Club Championships
- 6 July – Captain’s Day
- 31 July – 4 August PGC Open Golf Week
- 7 Sept – Haskett Trophy Open Event
- 16 Nov – Trophy Presentation Night
- 7 Dec – Shirley Rees & Xmas Draw
And as we start 2020 we could be playing under the New World Handicapping System, now there’s a thought. Play well and enjoy a new year’s golfing season.
Peter Badger Club Secretary.
See you on the fairways soon.
