Edwalton June Newsletter
Welcome to the June edition of the Edwalton Golf Centre newsletter for 2019.
June has been the wettest month that we have had at Edwalton for many years. With 163ml of rain recorded, that’s more than 4 times the rainfall we had in May! In fact, we had more rain in 1 day than we did in the whole of May! As a result, yes, you guessed it, the grass has had a pick-me-up! Fortunately, we have been able to stay mowing and although there is some standing grass we are managing to keep the course in a good condition.
Continuing our maintenance program (which has been affected by the weather), we verticut the greens. This is a light scarification and will aid in the removal/prevention of thatch. Thatch is essentially a build up of organic matter (dead grass). Like a thatch roof, thatch on the greens can have a similar effect and stop water penetrating into the soil.
Ever striving to enhance playing pleasure.

PGA Professional & Golf Services Supervisor update:
June was a wet month in comparison to last years soaring temperatures but many of you still managed to dodge the showers and get out there on the course.
I would like to share with you our recent success in attracting more female golfers to Edwalton. Firstly my Tuesday morning class which runs every week from 10-11am is growing in popularity, they are photographed on the right playing on the main course for their first time. Most of them only started attending the class last summer and have progressed so quickly, well done Ladies! (From your proud Coach!)
We also ran the first session of our new initiative, ‘Sip & Swing’, which pretty much says it all. Ladies arrived from 6.45pm and were handed a glass of prosecco from our very attentive bar man Jack (photographed on the right). From 7pm the Ladies were given a brief ‘Introduction to Golf’ on the driving range and continued to hit their unlimited range balls until pretty much nightfall!
Well done to all that came along and had a great time. Our next ‘Sip & Swing’ event will be
on the 1st of August, I will be up in Scotland but Danny Bursztyn our other PGA Professional will be running the evening alongside Jack. Please note that pre-booking is required due to the popular demand.
Reminder: Keep a lookout for my FREE golf tips on our Facebook page which can be accessed via the link below. There will be new videos added each month so make sure you keep up to date.
Golf Services Supervisor & PGA Professional
June has been a bit of an up and down month here at Edwalton! With the tough start to the month we had weather wise, the course suffered with the greenkeepers not being able to get out on the mowers. However, as soon as the rain cleared they brought the course back to an excellent standard within a week, so credit to Richard, Phil and Nick for all their hard work throughout the month!
We launched our first Ladies driving range and prosecco night, as mentioned in Chris’ section of the newsletter, which was a massive success. This is part of our push to try and encourage more ladies to come down to Edwalton and try golf, whether it be casually on the Driving Range or playing a round on the Main Course. Thank you to everyone that attended the event, for the next one (1st August) we will be running a booking sheet so please ring up and book your place!
A relatively quiet month in the clubhouse with regards to functions. We hosted a wedding reception on the 22nd which, as always, was great to be a part of. We had our usual bookings of Probus, Breakfast club and the NHS support groups Breathe Easy and Lung Function running throughout the month also, who are all a pleasure to have coming regularly to the Centre and their custom is valued highly.
Michele’s fantastic work around the clubhouse is drawing to a close. With the final delivery of materials coming within the next couple of weeks, the area will be finished for you all to enjoy by the end of July. Credit to Michele as he has done a fantastic job of creating a nice outdoor environment for everyone to enjoy throughout summer.
I would like to thank you all for your continued support over the last month and hope to see you on the fairways soon.
