Duxbury Park Golf Course

Project update

February 2021

Firstly we hope this finds you safe and well during what is now the 3rd national lockdown. We are definitely missing everyone but look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Prior to and throughout this lockdown period the greenkeeping team have been working hard behind the scenes, to improve the condition of the course. It hasn’t been easy with the adverse weather conditions but we are slowly getting there.

We know some of you will be aware of what the greenkeeping team has been up to through Facebook & Instagram but we wanted to send you a more comprehensive report of what we are and will be doing over the coming months. Included in this month’s update:

  • Path Works
  • Drainage works
  • Investment into new machinery

The work we are doing is extremely exciting and Glendale Golf will be investing in excess of £100,000 into course improvements over the next 12 months. This will include new paths, improved drainage and new machinery, which we feel will significantly improve the course playability all year round. In regards to improving the drainage we have teamed up with premier sports contractor J-Mallinson. J-Mallinson has worked on courses such as Royal Birkdale and Royal Lytham & St. Annes, so have great experience in golf course maintenance and we are glad to have them on board.

Path Works

We are already underway with the path works, these include:

Additional paths are being added or current paths extended on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 17th & 18th.

The path extensions are primarily to get around wet/muddy areas, getting you onto fairways and from greens to tees. Some of the tees will also have an extended section around the bench, where you will be able to put your trolleys/bags while you are waiting. We also hope the path works will enable the buggies to stay out for an extended period of time, especially during those rainy days.

For any paths with slopes we are using a toughened plastic grid system to stabilise materials and stop washouts.

Drainage works

As mentioned above J-Mallinson will be carrying out the drainage works, which include the following:

  • 4th fairway inspect and repair/install drainage, this area does stay wet after prolonged wet weather. With existing drainage fixed this will help improve playability throughout the season
  • Pond clearance: From the left hand side of the 5th fairway, a significant amount of water from an off site ditch runs underneath Wigan lane and onto the course, causing the 5th fairway to flood. J-Mallinson will dig out the pond, shape it to hold more water and clear the current drains to run clear. This will also have a knock on effect to the 6th (where it floods at the bottom of the slope) and the 7th (to the right in front of the tee box).
  • 17th fairway full drainage layout – we started drainage works on this area in 2020 and now Mallinson will take over and finish the good work started by the greenkeeping team.
  • There will also be some inspection work of other drain lines to ensure they are working properly.

The majority of this work should be in place and ready for the start of the 2021 season.

Machinery Investment

Duxbury is a parkland course meaning it’s surrounded by trees and built on farming agricultural land. The grass grows fast especially in the rough at an alarming rate!
This year we will be investing in a grass collector, the machine cuts and collects and will be used to aid in stopping the dreaded grass clippings.

We will also be adding 8 brand new electric buggies to our fleet. The buggies are already on order and we are hoping to receive them in time for the start of the season.

I’m sure you will agree this is all very exciting and will be a great investment into the golf course. We look forward to seeing you out on the fairways soon.
