Course Update | Portsmouth Golf Course
We hope this course update finds you safe and well during this second national lockdown. We are all very excited about the prospect of opening next week and look forward to getting golfers back on the course. Until then, we will continue to work hard behind the scenes to make sure we are ready on the 2nd December. Throughout this lockdown period the green keeping team, albeit reduced have continued to work and kept the course in great shape for you all to enjoy on your return. Please read on to find out what we have been up to.
Greens
The greens have benefited from the lockdown period and show excellent recovery from the hollow coring project that we completed at the start of October. During closure we have cut the greens every 2/3 days to help maintain their health and quality. In addition to this we have slit the greens every week to encourage air into the soil profile and assist with drainage.
With the recent mild and wet conditions we have had some disease pressure to contend with on the greens. This has been combated with a fungicide application to all putting surfaces with a positive result. We will continue to monitor this on a daily basis. We have also applied a granular fertiliser to all greens which we help to strengthen the leaf as we approach the colder months.
Fairways / Rough / Surrounds
Our fleet of machines have been busy throughout the closure ensuring that all areas of the course have been cut and shape preserved. We start to see the frequency of cut starting to slow as the rate of growth reduces in line with temperatures. We will continue to cut as and when required.
Tees
As with the greens our teeing areas have benefited from the period of closure. After a busy season and high footfall the teeing areas were desperate for some recovery time which they have received. During the closure all teeing areas have received a heavy top dressing with seed to encourage recovery. With the teeing areas moving to winter mats they will have the time to rest and recover further still over the winter period.
General
With a week to go until our reopening we will now look to get the course ready for play. We have plenty of work ahead of us and look forward to seeing golfers back out on the fairways.
