December Newsletter - Richmond Park Golf Course

The latest updates from London’s local golf venue

Dear Golfer,

As we approach the end of 2020, it’s fair to say that most of us will be looking forward to a brighter 2021. The pandemic has gripped our lives, but we’re pleased to have been able to offer our community of golfers (and many newcomers) a place to exercise, have fun and spend time in nature. Together, we’ve proven that golf venues are a safe place to be, so thanks again to all our staff and customers who have been understanding and cooperative with the ever-changing rules and regulations.

With news that an effective mass-vaccination is on the horizon, we look forward to starting the New Year with plenty of optimism. Physical activity will also play a key role in nation’s recovery – the pandemic has made it more difficult for many people to exercise, but golf is well-positioned to help create happier, healthier communities.

Latest COVID update

Following the November lockdown, all Glendale Golf Centres reopened on 2nd December. The winter months were always going to be a testing time for containing the virus and subsequently further restrictions have been imposed by the Government. Richmond Park Golf Course moved into Tier 3 from 16th December, however we’re pleased to confirm our golf courses, driving range and golf lessons services continue as before. Tier 3 regulations mean that our clubhouse is now only open for takeout food, (non-alcoholic) drink, retail and WCs.

Head Greenkeeper’s update

Mike Budd joined our team in October as our new Head Greenkeeper. He’s quickly settled into the new role (despite the obvious challenges!) and is formulating a plan to further improve our two wonderful golf courses in 2021. Click here to read the latest Head Greenkeeper’s Blog.

Record levels of golf played

Golf has experienced a mini-boom in the wake of the pandemic, with many newcomers and returning golfers attracted by the safe, open-air environment of a golf course. Over 100,000 rounds of golf will have been played at Richmond Park in 2020 and record levels of new members have signed up to enjoy London’s local golf venue. This incredible demand has meant we’ve had to significantly adapt our operations to ensure we continue to offer the very best experience and playing conditions.

These changes included limiting tee times to three people (to help maintain a reasonable pace of play) and advance online bookings only. While we’ve seen huge numbers of visits, we’ve prioritised the safety and welfare of our staff and customers throughout.

Plans for 2021

We’ve been delighted with how the quality of our two golf courses has continously improved in the last few years, despite a significant increase in visits and more recently, the challenges that the pandemic has had on resources. Our drive to raise the bar even further is highlighted in our Values and our plans for 2021.

We have a robust maintenance and improvement programme in place for the coming season, which includes:

  • A significant investment into machinery upgrades and additions. We’ve already started this programme with the arrival of the very latest technology in rough mowers, spraying units and turf aeration equipment. This kit will allow us to carry out more frequent conditioning of the playing surfaces, with less disruption.
  • Fairway refurbishment plans include overseeding, aeration and new cultural methods to improve the quality of fairways over the winter months.
  • Training and development opportunities for our team of greenkeepers, including NVQ vocational qualifications in turfcare and engineering.

Golf venue operators around the country have seen huge number of new range users and this has certainly been the case at Richmond Park. We are reviewing redevelopment plans for the range, which include the addition of TopTracer technology and improved weather protection.

The pandemic has impacted hospitality and catering services and it’s no different for golf venues. We’ve had to adapt to changing regulations, but we’re optimistic that this part of business will bounce back in 2021 and we are carefully planning how we can offer an even better food & beverage experience for next spring and beyond.

We’ll also be working with our team of Golf Coaches to provide a comprehensive golf academy and lessons service. We’ve seen a huge interest from new and returning golfers this year, so our Coaches will play an important role in helping more people enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of golf.

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a healthy, happy Christmas and we can’t wait to see you again in the New Year. Please get in touch if you have any suggestions, comments or feedback and I look forward to seeing you on the fairways soon.

Best regards
